The Whalan Museum was established in 2002, under the direction of the late Doris Peterson. The museum is housed in the historic Whalan Town Hall (1898) which was renovated in 2013. The hall was the towns gathering place for over 100 years, and continues to host community events. The museum contains many artifacts related to the town of Whalan, including photographs, military medals, school items, railroad lights, theater curtain, and more.

The mission of the Fillmore County Historical Society is to collect, preserve, and interpret Fillmore County artifacts, documents, literature, and photographs. Through displays and exhibits, the Fillmore County Historical Society preserves and interprets the heritage of our area. Our goal is to enrich both present and future generations through the preservation of our historical past. The museum began as a completely restored historic railroad depot dedicated to preserving the heritage of this community and the surrounding area. An annex had to be built in 2001 to house the expanding collection: over 2500 indexed photos, business advertising and memorabilia, help with genealogical requests that pertain to this area, military displays, many items used by the depot/railroad, and much more.
